Voraxial Separator

by Ram on Jul.23, 2010, under gadgets, latest technology

The Voraxial Separator is a device that uses centrifugal force in order to separate different liquids. Because gravity will have a different effect on different liquids due to differing densities – it is a great solution to separate different liquids without causing unneeded ecological problems. This technology is relatively new and it is relevant at the moment with the current oil spill in the United States of America. Enviro Voraxial Technology (the firm responsible for the device) has approached British Petroleum with their device and touted it as a method to mop up the spill without causing greater strain to the wider environment. Their idea is to mount the device on the decks of ships and then send the ships out into the middle of the slick.

Voraxial Separator The device will keep the oil for later disposal and pump out clean water. It has been shown to work exceedingly well during testing and the method will work for large volumes of sludge as long as the device is large enough. It has the capacity to pump mega litres of clean water out per hour (again – this depends on the size of the device) and the water is cleaned to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) standards. This means that any animals that happen to wonder into the cleansed water will not suffer the same fate as those who wander into the sludge.

It may just be the thing to help pull British Petroleum out of their predicament at the moment. This is if they are willing to invest in large enough processing plants that utilize the technology. Once the leak is plugged they still have to contend with one hell of a massive cleanup. They are already liable for prosecution from all manner of individuals who have been affected by the oil spill. Anything they can do to save face will ensure their long term survivability as a company.

Social Networking Websites

by Ram on Jul.18, 2010, under latest technology

You may have heard about Facebook, MySpace or Twitter on the television, internet or even from a friend; but what do these services have to offer that a conventional phone conversation cannot.  Sometimes phone conversations can feel a bit awkward as if there is nothing to talk about. They may require you halting all further actions to concentrate on what is being said at that specific time. With a social networking site you are able to create topics and conversation pieces with just a few mouse clicks. You can add pictures and video to get your message across. You can talk about subjects beforehand with more time to think about what it is you are trying to convey. Plus there is a multiplayer gaming community that can be used to link one person to another.

Social Networking Websites With a social networking site such as Facebook you can post a visual image of a certain event in your life that basically describes itself. There is a chat option and a global messaging ability that allows your thoughts to be seen in all of your friends’ eyes. With a conventional phone call you can only leave what you are trying to communicate about to the listener’s imagination. With a social networking site you can show off your family’s barbecue night or child’s baseball game with one picture and not have to go on and on with description. Combined with a phone conversation a social networking site offers so much more to staying connected with friends and family. Keeping in touch with everyone you know has never been simpler than consolidating it all into one service that announces your thoughts and life events with ease.

Sure, nothing beats person to person communication – but why not have a simpler way to keep in touch with friends? While the technology may not be new, it offers constant innovation in the way it allows people to keep in touch.

Solid State Storage Devices

by Ram on Jul.17, 2010, under latest technology

I dislike trusting my data with devices that utilize so many moving parts. They are easily damaged and have an extremely limited shelf life if used heavily. I notice that any mechanical hard drive I have does not last long and with the exception of the power supply it is normally the first thing to eventually die. Solid state storage is not exactly a new technological trend – however for the sake of the everyday consumer it is now accessible. Solid storage offers many advantages over traditional hard drive options such as speed and reliability. Because they are a solid device with a minimum of moving parts (most of the time none) they are less likely to suffer mechanical fault and are not reliant on the speed of the mechanical parts in order to transfer data.

Solid State Storage Devices Solid state storage relies on saving a charge that depicts the data. The charge can come from electricity or liquid crystal. Solid state hard drives can use the same interface as a regular hard drive and are normally a little more costly than a regular hard drive. This cost is quickly becoming cheaper however and it is assumed that eventually they will take over the market as the only hard drives available. They are generally not as ample in space as a regular hard drive, but you should be backing up your data regularly and really shouldn’t require a massive amount of storage for important files.

Currently, there are not many companies offering solid state hard drives. They are not hard to find however. The warranty that you get on a solid state hard drive is likely to be longer than that of a regular mechanical hard drive because they are much more reliable than a regular hard drive. Ensure you purchase your solid state hard drive from a trusted source.

SCiB Battery Technology

by Ram on Jul.16, 2010, under gadgets, latest technology

I really like the idea of electric cars. However, the current lack of support in the form of charging stations the poor performance in regards to range and recharge time is something that makes me wonder if the electric car is just a pipe dream in terms of usability. That is where Toshiba’s SCiB battery technology comes in to smash any predetermined doubts you had regarding the electric car being unfeasible as a means of transport. Traditionally, it took electric car batteries over thirty minutes to charge (give or take a few minutes). The SCiB battery can recharge to ninety percent capacity in five minutes.

SCiB Battery Technology The buck does not stop there. The battery is touted to last ten years. That is not how long a single charge lasts – but how long the battery itself lasts before it will need to be replaced. This is good news for people who are ecologically minded. A battery can contain all manner of nasty materials that can do some serious damage to the environment. This is likely to be the battery that will finally make electronic cars possible and help reduce our need for (overpriced) petrol. It may also help companies finally start investing in electronic charging stations for vehicles.

There is no word on when this is likely to become available to consumers. However, it seems like it is something that it will not take long for companies who manufacture electric vehicles to start using in their production lines. It is something that will ensure that electric cars get the research that then need in order to make the technology feasible for the masses. I had some trouble finding out how far a single charge will carry the vehicle – if it is similar to that of the current electric vehicles that have been released then it may just be a winner.

Sony 3D Camera

by Ram on Jul.15, 2010, under latest technology

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX9 and DSC-WX5 are touted as the smallest 3D cameras in the world (and they are also affordable). In the past, 3D cameras were only affordable by those in the film industry or contractors who have money to burn. This is now no longer the case. Although these cameras do not support video, they are an amazing advancement of the whole 3D technology industry. They are putting 3D in the hands of consumers. Although getting that perfect 3D shot is not promised as an easy task with these cameras; the ability to do so with an ordinary digital camera device is something that should not be scoffed at.

Sony 3D Camera Of course to take advantage of the 3D imagery that is shot via these cameras will require a 3D television. You also have the option of just shooting your shots with a 2D lens. The cameras have support for the various SD cards available on the market so storage will never be an issue. However, the real selling point for this camera is its capacity to shoot photos in 3D. Now you not only be able to support your memories with photos, but actually get close enough to full immersion in them to almost relive the moments!

Although 3D televisions are expensive, the technology to really utilize them is starting to catch up. It seems like 3D has made a massive jump from expensive fantasy into consumer reality overnight. The technology might have some kinks, but it is to be expected when anything new starts to take hold on the consumer market. I would be surprised if we don’t have affordable 3D video cameras available for consumer use in the next five years at the speed the industry is growing. However, having an affordable camera that takes 3D stills is something I never expected to see so suddenly.

Mimo Mini USB Monitor

by Ram on Jul.06, 2010, under latest technology

While it may seem like an overpriced piece of junk with no useful applications what so ever – it isn’t. The Mimo Mini USB Monitor does not require any external power other than that supplied by the USB port. It also does not require connection to your graphics adapter. The whole thing is self contained and the only connection necessary is that of a USB connector. It is a seven inch widescreen monitor that can be position in a landscape or portrait orientation and it even offers touch screen support (depending on the model). This gives it a range of useful applications. Sometimes you just want a second monitor to send a movie to while gaming or working. Or you need a second monitor to show some plans or a design that you are working from. This is where the Mimo Mini USB Monitor comes into its own.

Mimo Mini USB Monitor It is also useful for people who need a second monitor for a laptop for portable use. Because the monitor easily packs up for storage and can easily fit next to your laptop in a laptop bag it is a serious contender for a second laptop monitor. It is also useful for people who have very limited space on their desk and will not be able to fit another larger monitor on it. There is a wide variety of uses for the monitor and its usefulness is only limited by your imagination.

It may seem like an extravagant cost for what it is, but it is worth noting that it is designed for a very specific niche. It is plug and play (after the drivers have been installed) and is designed to be as hassle free as possible to use. The touch screen capable version is the version which I find most interesting however. It saves you having to use a keyboard or mouse to activate the material on the second monitor.

Bionics

by Ram on Jul.05, 2010, under latest technology

Bionics is a field that has firm roots in the realm of science fiction. This is fast becoming a reality however. We have basic metal implants that can help rebuild a damaged skull or patch up shattered bones. We are now into the next wave of bionic development that is centered on replacing whole limbs. While researching this article I came across a story about a cat named Oscar. Oscar was unlucky. While sleeping he was run over with a combine harvester. The combine harvester was merciless. Oscar lost both rear legs in the accident and it was obvious that some pretty drastic measures had to be taken to allow him to ever walk again.

Bionics That is where Noel Fitzpatrick comes into the equation. Noel is a vet who managed to graft metal rods into Oscar’s back legs. The metal rods protruded from stumps that were where Oscar’s feet were meant to be. This allowed Noel to attach feet to the rods that were a crude form of bionic foot. While the word crude may seem like the wrong word in this instance because they were the result of careful engineering – they are not relevant to the field of bionics that you may think. They were not electronic feet that had the ability to transfer brainwaves into actual movement. They were designed to be soft and work like the pads on a cat’s paw in order to absorb impact and give some play in the movement of the foot.

This is a fairly revolutionary step in the field. Because the metal rods are drilled straight into the bone and have not been rejected by the cat’s body – it means that they have found a compound that can be used for future bionic research to get us that one step closer to having a robotic finger, hand or arm.

Concrete that Cleans the Air

by Ram on Jul.01, 2010, under latest technology

Emissions that are the result of burning regular fossil fuels (like the fuel in your car) are made up a massive amount of different compounds. Even if we are able to reduce the emission levels of one of these compounds it is a good thing and will help bring down the pollution created by driving. That is where the research done by researchers at Eindhoven’s University of Technology in the Netherlands will become a formidable method to reduce the global ecological damage caused by cars that are on the road. They have developed a concrete that strips nearly fifty percent of the nitrogen oxides from exhaust emissions.

Concrete that Cleans the Air The concrete was developed in a laboratory and after extensive testing a one thousand square meter stretch of road was laid to test the concrete in a real test of its potential. The concrete works by stripping nitrogen oxides from the air and converting them into nitrate (a nontoxic compound) as the sunlight and concrete worked together to break it down. The nitrate is then carried away by rain and never seen again. So it not only turns a once toxic chemical into something benign – but using the forces of nature makes the problem virtually disappear.

It is assured by those who can supply the concrete that the cost incurred is not really much more than that of regular asphalt or concrete. In this regard it can be considered economically sound as well as ecologically. It can also be mixed with regular concrete and asphalt without jeopardizing the structural integrity of the latter materials. It may just be an easy way for roads to do something extra besides protect a vehicle from unnecessary wear – it will also help reduce the environmental effect of having many cars spewing forth noxious fumes from their tail pipes.

Combating Online Plagiarism

by mritunjay on Mar.18, 2010, under latest technology

Plagiarism has become a worldwide concern and organizations and watchdogs are finding it difficult to contain the culture of rampant plagiarism. Everyone requires quality content and that has further led to unbridled copy and paste stuff. This phenomenon is not just restricted to one single area. Whether it is software, music, movies or literature, nothing is considered safe. We keep hearing about heavy losses suffered by film and music industry because of plagiarism. No one cares whether you paid good money to get the content or have worked hard to create the stuff; plagiarism is becoming hard to stop. Technological advancement is not helping the cause either.

However, as world is becoming aware of this malice, authorities are putting into place some tough norms to contain the problem. Some wonderful tools have been invented to identify, track, and stop this trend. ‘Bad behaviour’ is one of the leading tools that helps in stopping spam apart from preventing programmed plagiarism by capturing unlawful bots that are found visiting your web pages.

‘Watermark.ws’ is a useful tool for overlaying your copyrighted pictures with fully customised logos or texts. That way, thieves will be reluctant to steal these images. Similarly, ‘PictureShark’ can easily stamp text or watermark images on your picture files. It is not easy to remove watermark created by the program.

Almost all of us have heard of ‘Copyscape’ which is perhaps one of the best tools to prevent plagiarism. This is basically duplicate content detection software which quickly searches the web for plagiarized portions. Many webmasters and writing services prefer to use this dependable tool. Google also provides you with programs like ‘Alerts’ and ‘Image Search’ which are useful in stopping stealing of pictures. Some other popular plagiarism detecting tools are ‘Maxpower Digital Fingerprint Plug-In’, ‘Copyfeed’, and domain tools.
